From Spain to the World
The language English speakers usually call Spanish is, in fact, Castilian (castellano), as it is just one of the languages spoken in Spain, along with Galician, Catalan, Basque, and some regional dialects. This language took root on the American Continent at the time of the Spanish Conquest. It is the second most spoken language in the Western World.
Spoken originally just in the area nowadays known as Castilla, the language rapidly spread to most countries in the Americas after Spain conquered areas that later became countries such as Argentina and Mexico. Spanish is also spoken in parts of Africa and Asia, as well as in the United States.
Differences
Spanish grammar and spelling usually follow rules set
out by the RAE. However, there are some major differences in vocabulary between Spain and the Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America. Also noteworthy is that there are variations within Spain.
